Swimming Lessons

For the past few summers, Jewel has loved to go to the pool and swim. Her definition of swimming means using an innertube, waterwings, or mom and dad as a flotation device. She DOES NOT like to go underwater or get her face/hair wet. (Yet another reason I know she is my daughter.) She has taken lessons from some very sweet lady, but Jewel was easily able to talk her out of going under...but not this year!!

From a friend, I found out about a lady who teaches "survival" swimming for kids. They learn to turn over on their backs to float and catch their breath and then roll over and continue swimming. She even does this for very young babies. The kicker was that she is firm and makes them put their face in the water. EUREKA!! That's all I had to hear.

Jewel was a little anxious Monday on our way to our first lesson. She was already trying to talk me out of going. The shrieking and screaming started from the moment her toe touched the water. Miss Swim Teacher was firm and basically made Jewel go under...every time. Jewel was clinging and sobbing to stop and trying to talk her way out of going under. Miss Swim Teacher would have nothing of it!! It was a little embarrassing for me sitting on the sidelines with the other parents as Jewel continued her hysterics. Thank goodness her lesson is only 10 minutes. They were reassuring their own kids that there was nothing wrong with Jewel and that Miss Swim Teacher was not hurting her. :)

Needless to say, with the vision of a DQ hot fudge sundae on the horizon after Thursdays lesson, Jewel has been excited to go back the past two days. We have had no crying, and she actually can't wait to go and put her face in and swim some more. She is so proud of herself...as are Scooter and me. Hallelujah!! Miss Swim Teacher is a miracle worker!!
